In energy efficiency and leak resistance, Ice-America continues to outperform and deliver. Leftovers were preserved longer, most likely to the chagrin of the children in a home, and around the same time inventors were working on creating American frozen food meals. Refrigeration techniques had been utilized by breweries and then spread to Chicago’s meat packing industry.

They were using refrigerants like sulfur dioxide and methyl chloride which were harmfully impacting people who were exposed to it. That type of refrigeration was not going to be placed in homes. In 1884 it was reported that almost every home but the poorest had ice boxes. It became normal for homes to post a sign in the window whenever they needed more ice.

However up until the 1930s these meals were mushy, frozen with ice shards, and not very appetizing. Regardless of the early pitfalls of frozen foods, there was still a lot to benefit from in having a home ice box. It was an easier way to keep meat and dairy products longer. It sure beat the time it took to preserve with canning or salting. The flavors were reportedly fresher, and that was all the public needed to know.
In the latter case, men would be commissioned to take a voyage to the Arctic, to chip pieces of ice from huge icebergs to satisfy the need back home. But it was made into a lucrative business when Fredric Tudor decided to make money from old fashioned New England winters. Tudor, born in 1783 in Boston, Massachusetts would be known as the “Ice King”. Now, Boston in 1783 was just recovering from the American Revolution.

Things You Need to Know About Starting an Ice Vending Machine Business
Being who he was, a philanthropist, and knowledge seeker Jefferson no doubt waited patiently for his experiment to unfold. He wasn’t around when the first ice house on his property was built; rather he monitored the progress from Philadelphia in 1803. Yet letters were constant between himself and the people at his estate, because he knew that the harvest of ice would allow him to have cold drinks in the summer as well as cool desserts.
The population that had once thrived was small; most had left during the revolution to escape the ravages of war and military takeovers. The population was 10,000 in 1780 and many were struggling to make money. Tudor was by no means poor himself though; in fact he had the opportunity to go to Harvard. It wasn’t his destiny; instead he and his brother hunted, fished, practiced courting rituals, and learned the life of the privileged. It was a passing comment at a summer picnic that drove him to think of their pond as a possibility to make money.
It not only would change the Caribbean, with ice being shipped from Boston to Martinique, but it would also change the United States. Now, ice harvest festivals remain, as a fun reminder of the past. Communities gather over ice-covered ponds and snow banks to watch local historians as they demonstrate 19th and 18th century harvesting techniques. Some audience members are invited to participate, carrying large chunks of ice to a sled where it is pulled by a horse to an ice house - if one is available.

New business brings ice on demand - McDonough Voice
For Jefferson there was no other method to nicely preserve his butter and meat. During heat waves, while others sipped tepid water, those who were able to drank cool drinks. Thomas Jefferson had a problem with his self-designed ice house around 1806, namely keeping his ice house dry and filled. ”About a third is lost to melting.”[1] Thereafter, it was imperative to catch the water that was in the ice house. Jefferson filled the ice house with snow to insulate the ice and keep it from melting, and still men were employed to empty it. Jefferson wrote to his overseer, to harvest from the nearby Rivanna River.

Others, most notably some of his colleagues in New York, tried to oust him earlier this fall. “Anyone who thinks a special election on Long Island is a slam dunk for Democrats has been living under a rock for the last three years,” said Isaac Goldberg, a strategist who advised the losing Democratic campaign against Mr. Santos in 2022. Local Republicans moved decisively to distance themselves from Mr. Santos last January, and the strategy has shown signs of working. When Long Island voters went to the polls for local contests last month, they delivered a Republican rout that left Democrats scrambling to figure out how to rehabilitate a tarnished political brand. Political analysts rate the district, stretching from the outskirts of New York City into the heart of Nassau County’s affluent suburbs on Long Island, as a tossup.

The resolution is unlikely to succeed, given the political dynamics at play and underlying mechanics involved in expelling a sitting representative. Under House rules, Republicans can move to table the measure or refer it to the House Ethics Committee, both of which would require a simple majority. A vote on the underlying resolution to expel Santos would require the approval of two thirds of members under the Constitution. Republicans control the 435-seat House by a margin of four seats, meaning dozens of GOP members would need to side with the Democrats to successfully expel Santos. The indictment alleges he stole the identities of campaign donors and then used their credit cards to make tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges.

Republicans mount 11th-hour push for George Santos to resign.
Santos faces nearly two dozen felony counts related to alleged wire fraud, identity theft and campaign finance violations. Proponents say this new tax is essential because city officials expect funds available for affordable housing construction to plummet in the coming years. Although the measure has received endorsements from a slew of unions, social justice groups and The Times’ editorial board, neither mayoral candidate has come out in favor of it (Remember, the editorial boards operates separately from the newsroom). But the resolution from Democrats is privileged, meaning that Speaker Mike Johnson must address it within two days.
House Ethics chairman files resolution to expel Rep. George Santos from Congress
The first-term New York Republicans who have been Santos’s biggest G.O.P. critics are holding a news conference on the House steps. “It’s time to move on from George Santos,” Representative Nick Lalota tells reporters. Unlike in a normal election, party leaders in Washington and New York — not primary voters — will choose the Democratic and Republican nominees. They were moving quickly to winnow the field of potential candidates, and could announce their picks in a matter of days. He and others argued that Mr. Santos should not have been removed based on the findings of a House ethics report that unearthed multiple wrongdoings and instead should have let his criminal case play out to determine his fate. The office — for months the background for television news shots and the staging ground for protests demanding he leave the House after his penchant for lies was exposed — became a gathering point after Mr. Santos was expelled from Congress, with people taking selfies outside.
Six candidates are seeking to replace City Controller Ron Galperin at City Hall, which has been buffeted by FBI probes into council members, political aides and others. In a break from recent tradition, there’s not an incumbent or a well-known elected official among the candidates running to become L.A. Seven people are running to be Los Angeles city attorney, a race with a wide field and no incumbent. As voters head to the polls across Los Angeles to elect new leaders, a new poll finds homelessness, housing affordability and crime among their top issues. On X, LaLota reacted to Santos' statement, saying, "He's taking a plea deal," referring to the 23 federal charges Santos is facing and his upcoming trial. There is no funding mechanism as part of this measure or accompanying tax hit for voters.
They are wary of repeating their experience with Mr. Santos, who secured the party’s backing in 2020 and 2022 despite presenting them with a fraudulent résumé and other glaring fabrications that they failed to catch. Jay Jacobs, the Democratic leader for the state and Nassau County, said he still intended to screen multiple candidates, including Ms. Kaplan, a more progressive former state senator who remains in the race, even as other candidates dropped out and coalesced behind Mr. Suozzi. Democratic strategists said they would continue to use the embarrassment of Mr. Santos to attack Republicans, blaming them for aiding the former congressman’s rise.

He withdrew from the House of Representatives in August 1861 and was expelled four months later for disloyalty to the Union. He was a volunteer aide to General Sterling Price of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. A lawyer and militia officer, he was a member of Missouri’s House of Representatives before being elected to Congress in 1856. A lawyer and politician, he was the Trigg County Court clerk before being elected to represent Kentucky’s First Congressional District in 1854.
Expelling a representative requires a two-thirds majority, a threshold that the previous efforts failed to meet. But since the ethics report was released, a number of lawmakers who previously opposed expulsion have publicly changed their views. In May 2023, while facing a House ethics probe, Santos was arrested on federal fraud charges that accuse him of bilking political donors.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., soon took the gavel, quieted the chamber and solemnly instructed the House clerk to inform the governor of New York that Santos’ former House seat was now vacant. Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a post on X that she is "prepared to undertake the solemn responsibility of filling the vacancy in New York's 3rd District. The people of Long Island deserve nothing less." “If there is a report forthcoming, I think we owe it to ourselves to give ourselves a couple of weeks so that we are all operating off the same information,” she said.
President Biden won the district by eight points in 2020, but it has shifted rightward in three consecutive elections since, as voters fearful about crime and inflation have flocked to Republicans. Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York has 10 days to formally schedule the contest after Friday’s lopsided vote to remove Mr. Santos. But both parties expect the election to take place in mid-to-late February, just over a year after he first took the oath of office. “To hell with this place,” Santos declared after a reporter asked him if he planned on visiting the House floor using the privileges given to former congressmen. In September, prosecutors said they were discussing “possible paths forward” with Mr. Santos’s team, leading to speculation that the congressman could be negotiating a plea deal that might include his resignation. Mr. Santos has also asserted that he had no involvement in his campaign’s finances.
They long argued that his presence in their delegation was an embarrassment to the state party and hurt their chances for electoral success in 2024. Speaker Mike Johnson, still just weeks into his tenure, and members of his leadership team voted to save Mr. Santos, concerned about further winnowing down the party’s slim House majority. They joined with some of the same hard-right rebels who often revolt against them, in an unusual alliance that sought to keep the serial liar in their ranks.
"If they want to introduce their own resolution now that this has happened, they're welcome to do so. But our goal is to expel him this week." George Santos was also asked during his press conference whether he was wearing anything he bought with campaign funds, including the Ferragamo shoes he was wearing, NBC’s Kate Santaliz reports. Garcia called McCarthy's approach "a cop-out" at a news conference Wednesday morning.
The vote — 213 opposed to 179 in favor, with 19 representatives voting “present” — is the second time in nearly six months that Mr. Santos, 35, has evaded a push to expel him. And it has cleared the way for him to remain in office as he fights the 23-count federal indictment accusing him of involvement in a range of fraudulent schemes. LaLota is one of the Republicans who voted to expel Santos in December amid federal criminal charges. Santos has pleaded not guilty to fraud charges, and is scheduled to stand trial in September.
Also on Wednesday evening, the House voted to reject an effort to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Democrats called off an effort to censure Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). We have due process in America,” said GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, who opposed the expulsion resolution. The House floor debate over whether to expel Santos was undertaken strictly by members of the New York congressional delegation. On one side, Republican Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Nick LaLota and Mike Lawler laid out their case for expelling Santos.
Both Republicans and Democrats now expect a heavily contested special election to find Santos’s replacement in the coming months. Additionally, they found he misrepresented the use of these funds to donors and didn’t properly file reports to the Federal Election Commission. The lawmakers referred Santos’s case to the Justice Department for any potential penalties, and shortly after the report’s release, House Ethics Chair Michael Guest (R-MS) filed a resolution for Santos’s expulsion. “I have colleagues who are more worried about getting drunk with the next lobbyist that they’re gonna screw and pretend like none of us know what’s going on and sell out the American people,” he said in the X Space. Representative George Santos, Republican of New York, has told so many lies they can be hard to keep straight.
Two lawmakers moved Tuesday to force action on separate resolutions seeking to remove Santos from Congress, setting up votes in the House before the week's end. Bowman said in response to the expected expulsion resolution targeting him that Santos should not be taken seriously and called the Republican lawmaker's threatened measure "another meaningless stunt in his long history of cons, antics and outright fraud." Their goal was, in part, to force Republicans into taking a public position on Mr. Santos, who pleaded not guilty to all criminal charges.
Republicans could still move to table or postpone the vote, moves that would each require the support of a majority of the House. Those maneuvers would not rule out a vote on Mr. Guest’s resolution, however, if Republican leadership chooses to act on its own party’s motion to lessen the appearance of Democrats forcing the Republicans’ hand. Gabbard was elected to Congress in 2012 and sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.

Mr. D’Esposito even introduced a resolution to expel Mr. Santos, using a technical congressional maneuver to override Republican leadership and ensure that it was called to a vote. It’s worth noting how unusual it is for the chairman of the House Ethics Committee to give a speech like this on the floor. Representative Michael Guest, in his personal capacity, is calling for the expulsion of Santos based on the committee’s work but without a criminal conviction. That is unprecedented, and speaks to the deep shame he believes Santos has brought against the institution of the House. Santos has argued repeatedly that a vote to expel him would violate his right to due process. But Representative Nick LaLota, a Republican from Long Island, noted that the Constitution allows the House to set its own terms to expel its members by a two-thirds vote, and that it has different standards and procedures than criminal courts.
Here’s how two G.O.P. House speakers protected George Santos for months.
LaLota played a key role in the bipartisan effort to force Santos from office. Another chapter in the scandal-plagued career of New York Republican George Santos sputtered to an end this week as he abandoned his independent bid for a U.S. "I have decided to withdraw from my independent run for #NY1," Santos said in a statement on X, adding he was concerned that his candidacy could split the vote with GOP Rep. Nick LaLota and deliver the seat to Democrats. "The future holds countless possibilities and I am ready willing and able to step up to the plate and go fight for my country at anytime," he said. "I will continue to participate in the public policy discussion and will do my part… I will always strive to stand on the right side of history. It's only goodbye for now, I'll be back." LaLota has been dismissive of Santos but not of Santos' challenge itself, previously calling his former colleague an "embarrassment" and "one of the most bizarre people I have ever met" but saying he would take the race "seriously."

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said she hasn't decided how she would vote on the resolution. While the Ethics Committee does have a Republican chairman, its membership is evenly divided. Rep. Ms. Marks pleaded guilty to a felony count of conspiracy to defraud the United States in October and admitted to her role in fraudulently reporting the fictitious loan and donations. Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York will have 10 days to announce the date of a special election to fill the vacancy left by Mr. Santos’s departure. The election must take place between 70 and 80 days after she sets the date. Local party leaders generally pick their nominees in special elections.

Pressure for him to step down grew after he was indicted by the Justice Department on nearly two dozen federal charges, and reached a fever pitch after the Ethics panel released its report. After months of congressional hand-wringing, Mr. Santos finally met his demise on Friday, after Republicans and Democrats each offered separate expulsion resolutions. We’ve never seen that before,” Guest, who had also voted against Santos’s expulsion prior to the report, told SuperTalk Mississippi Radio.
House to Vote on George Santos Expulsion on Friday - The New York Times
House to Vote on George Santos Expulsion on Friday.
The race in New York is expected to be one of the most high-profile and expensive off-year House contests in decades. It has the potential to further shrink Republicans’ paper-thin majority and offer a preview of the broader battle for House control next November. The door to Santos’ office in the Longworth Building is locked and Santos has left the building. He then slammed the door when asked what the plan and timeline was for packing up the office. Moments after the vote to expel George Santos, House Republicans immediately grappled with the wisdom and gravity of removing one of their own. Much of the speculation surrounding him has been tied to the source of the more than $700,000 he claimed to have lent his political campaign in 2022.
Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, head of the California Labor Federation and former head of the AFL-CIO’s San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, confirmed to The Times that Herrera offered his resignation to the board. “We are focused on rebuilding solidarity and trust in the worker movement,” she said. California is a two-party consent state, which means that it’s illegal to record a conversation unless everyone consents.
Rep. George Santos easily survived a vote Wednesday to expel him from the House as most Republicans and 31 Democrats opted to withhold punishment while both his criminal trial and a House Ethics Committee investigation proceed. The Constitution requires a two-thirds majority of House lawmakers to oust a member. Guest, the chairman of the House Ethics Committee, did not initially bring up his resolution as privileged.

Caroline and George remained married; however, in 1820, when the 57-year-old ascended to the throne as King George IV, he refused to recognize his wife Caroline as Queen, and excluded her from his coronation. Her own children’s education was important as well, and Charlotte appointed and supervised their tutors and governesses. She was also an amateur botanist and drew the plants and flowers that grew around Kew Palace, the family’s summer home just upriver from London. Her nearby cottage was home to pheasants, exotic birds, and even some of the first kangaroos in Britain. Police officers "are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us," President Joe Biden said in a statement after Monday’s shooting. He briefly married Princess Frederica Charlotte of Prussia, and had no children. Adolphus – Queen Charlotte's brother – was born in Copenhagen in 1738, so during the events of King George and Queen Charlotte's marriage he would've been 22. The queen didn’t earn the nickname “Snuffy Charlotte” for nothing.
Biography of Queen Charlotte
Her resistance to the appointment of the dissolute Prince of Wales led to an estrangement between mother and son that would last for years. Once an unpolitical queen, she suddenly found herself the target of accusations that “the Queen is really King”. After a proxy wedding ceremony in Mecklenburg, Charlotte arrived at Harwich on the south coast of England in September 1761. Vast crowds lined the route to St James’s Palace, eager to glimpse the new queen, and by the time she arrived in London on 8 September, she was shaking with nerves.
When his older brother died in 1830, he succeeded him as King William IV. And, until King Charles III in 2022, he became the oldest person to assume the British throne at age 64. He reigned for just seven years until his death on June 20, 1837 at age 71. Since he had no legitimate children, the throne passed to his niece, Princess Victoria. George experienced severe stomach pain in 1788 that persisted for months and eventually led to weakness in his limbs and delirium.

He was the first child to die, followed shortly by his older brother Prince Octavius. Princess Sofia, the 12th child and 5th daughter of Queen Charlotte and King George, never married. However, she was rumored to have had an illegitimate child with Major-General Thomas Garth.
In 1785, he secretly married Maria Anne Fitzherbert, but the marriage was invalid under English law because his father, the monarch, did not consent to the union. In 1795, he married his cousin, Princess Caroline of Brunswick, but they formally separated a year later after the birth of their daughter, Princess Charlotte of Wales, in 1796. Sadly, she predeceased both her father and grandfather; Charlotte died in 1817 in childbirth. King George III, born Prince George William Frederick of Wales on June 4, 1738, was the eldest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. When his father Prince Frederick died unexpectedly in 1751 at age 44, George became heir apparent. During his 60-year reign, several major world events occurred, including the Seven Years War, the American Revolutionary War, and the Battle of Waterloo.
The photo was shared on social media with the caption, "Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte! 🎂 Thank you for all the kind messages today." George’s fourth birthday picture was taken by news photographer Chris Jackson and released under an embargo of 10 p.m. Professional photographer Matt Porteous took George’s fifth birthday image which was released on July 21 at 10.30 p.m. The Princess of Wales shared that George and Charlotte enjoyed helping out in the kitchen.
Charlotte’s husband suffered from intermittent bouts of mental illness throughout his adult life. During the first episode in 1765, George’s mother Augusta and Prime Minister Lord Bute managed to keep Charlotte completely unaware of what was happening. In addition, they made sure she was kept in the dark about the Regency Bill, which stated that in the event of George’s full incapacity, Charlotte herself would become Regent. Over the years, Charlotte and George had fifteen children together, thirteen of whom survived to adulthood.
Before that, the pictures have often been shared with British media under embargo on the eve of the big day to publish in newspapers on the day of the birthday. Prince William and Kate Middleton have worked to ensure that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis enjoy a childhood unencumbered by the photographers that plagued William’s youth. From taking legal action to issuing strongly worded public statements about intrusion, the couple has fought to stamp out unauthorized images of their family. When her younger brother Prince Louis was born in 2018, Princess Charlotte made history by being the first female to keep her spot in the line of succession to the British throne after the arrival of a younger brother.
A minor princess, Charlotte’s life changed forever when she was selected as the perfect candidate for marriage to the newly ascended King George III. The second son of Charlotte and George, Prince Frederick Augustus was born on August 16, 1763. He had a career in the army, and his father appointed him Commander-in-Chief in 1795 (he resigned in 1809).
Charlotte's most recent public appearance was in December, when she joined her family on their traditional walk to the Christmas Day service at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. Both she and George joined William and Kate for the queen's funeral later that year. Charlotte wore a horseshoe brooch to the funeral, a gift from Elizabeth, who had a love of horses. In 2022, she attended one of her first royal engagements with her parents, joining William, Kate and George on a visit to Cardiff Castle during Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebration.
She was pregnant regularly, yet still managed to find time to organize the decoration of a lodge in Windsor Park, which was where she and her family spent most of their time. In addition, she educated herself about diplomatic matters, and exercised a quiet and discreet influence over her husband’s political affairs, both foreign and domestic. In particular, she became involved in English-German relations, and may have had some influence in British intervention in Bavaria. Charlotte was taught the basics of language, music, and art, but much of her education was focused on domestic life and household management, in preparation for future as a wife and mother. Charlotte and her siblings were also educated in religious matters by a priest who lived with the family.

The Haunting of Hill House is an American supernatural horror drama television miniseries created and directed by Mike Flanagan, produced by Amblin Television and Paramount Television, for Netflix, and serves as the first entry in The Haunting anthology series. It is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. The Haddonfield, Illinois residence where a young Michael Myers murdered his sister in John Carpenter's original Halloween (1978) is actually located in South Pasadena. Abandoned at the time of the filming, it was later remodeled and moved a few blocks north from its original location. Glen’s home is located two houses down from Nancy’s, on the opposite side of the street. The late 1970s through the early 90s was a golden age of the horror/slasher flick, and nowhere was filming of the genre more prevalent than in the City of Angels and its environs.

However, as a huge fan of horror movies and horror TV shows, and especially as a fan of Mike Flanagan, I cannot help but assume that Midnight Mass could be the filmmaker’s next masterpiece. The first series, titled The Haunting of Hill House, is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. Hollywood’s historic Wattles Mansion was used as the demon-possessed home where Jonathan Graves lived in the 1985 horror-comedy, Ghoulies.
John Connor lives with his foster parents at this house in Canoga Park. It isn’t the most glamorous or stunning house to visit but for fans of the movie, it can still be fun to see. While the majority of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was filmed on location in Chicago, there were a few scenes that were filmed in the LA area. The exterior scenes of the Bueller house were among the ones filmed on the West Coast. As a huge fan of The Golden Girls seeing their “Miami” house in person was a thrill! I recently had the opportunity to see the inside of the home when it went on sale as it turns out that I knew the realtor.
From there, the first season flips back and forth in time to the Crain family as children and adults, so it can sometimes be tricky to keep track of who everyone is. One of Monrovia’s oldest surviving Victorian homes appeared as Leigh Cabot’s residence in Christine, John Carpenter’s 1983 film about a possessed Plymouth Fury. The gorgeous dwelling was originally constructed in 1887, the same year that Monrovia was incorporated as a city. The house was also where Betty White lived in the 2010 rom-com You Again. In Child's Play 2, the 1990 sequel to the cult favorite, Andy is sent to live with a foster family in a large two-story Craftsman residence located on a quiet street in South Pasadena. Unfortunately for Andy, his demon doll, Chucky, manages to track him down at the home and continues with his plan to possess his body.
The Thompson residence in the 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street is located in Hollywood at 1428 Genessee Avenue. According to the Los Angeles Times, this house was newly built but the owner hadn't yet moved into it because of construction on the Ventura Freeway, which now runs behind it. If you're a real fan, you may notice that this home looks shorter than the one in The Brady Bunch shows. Set designers attached fake windows on the roof to give the appearance of a second story. In October 2018, Mike Flanagan said that a possible second season would not continue the story of the Crain family, specifying, "it's done." Anna Enger's portrayal of the troubled Joey was enough to convince anyone that she was a seasoned actress.
However, if you’re a fan of The Big Bang Theory (and old Sheldon) you can see Sheldon and Leonard’s apartment and even sit in Sheldon’s spot. I wish I could visit the iconic Braverman house that Zeke and Camile owned on Parenthood but that was built on the Universal Backlots. However, there are locations where the many other characters lived that can be visited. This Pasadena home is where Adam & Kristina raise their three children on the show.
